Laura Kinsdale's THE SHADOW AND THE STAR and lovin' it. It's my first Kinsdale, although I'm pretty sure I've glommed her entire backlist.

Intially I would have said it read more like a historical/character study(hero's) with a strong romantic thread, but in the last third of the book the romance/relationship really takes front stage.

Unless a space ship make an appearance within the last ten pages or one of the protags dies, this one is definitely a keeper.

The book still gets bizarre within the last 40 pages or so! When the book moved to Hawaii and the kung-fu popped up, I had to close the book because it was too crazy for me. I did complete the book, but I had to read and re-read to understand what the hell was going on. I now understand the crazy endings for the Kinsale novels I have read an article/interview? where she admits she doesn't remember writing the books.

lol! I'll be honest, I skimmed those pages wheh they returned to Hawaii, just reading enough so hopefully I didn't miss anything significant re the romance. But the segue to ninja action/thriller story was, erm... odd. lol.

Still, the book is a keep simply because of the unorthodox way the story developed and the unique characterizaton. She takes chances, I'll say that much for her.
